Activity 5.2 Social work interventions for mood disorders

Select any one of the mood disorders discussed above and identify what role a social worker can play in supporting a person living with the disorder and their family. Give particular consideration to approaches that address recovery and social inclusion.

Key points

• Depression is a persistent absence of positive affect and often associated with social and economic adversity, such as unemployment or poor housing. Individuals who are prone to depression often report ways of thinking that are self-defeating, and cognitive behavioural therapies can be helpful in developing more realistic and flexible ways of thinking.

• ‘Post-natal blues’ are common following childbirth, and usually these feelings are transient, but some women are susceptible to post-natal depression. A very few experience puerperal psychosis, and in these situations risk to the newborn child and any siblings needs to be assessed.

• Manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder can be very disruptive to the lives of sufferers. Social workers may be able to offer support to individuals and their families, alongside medical intervention.

• For some individuals, overwhelming feelings of anxiety or panic can become associated with specific situations, giving rise to phobias, or chronic avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations. Current evidence suggests that cognitive behaviour therapies are the most successful form of intervention.

• Individuals who experience severe trauma, including sexual abuse or domestic violence, may experience delayed, severe stress reactions. These reactions can seem inexplicable unless their connection to earlier trauma is understood.
